Potential locations for our thriller Kellie Ward
As we have been through the planning process consisting of our initials ideas and plots for the opening, we were aware of what kinds of locations it required. Our thriller is about a deadly contagious virus affecting many, however focusing on one particular person who is a young girl. In order to show visually the concept of the plot; that the virus is affecting 'normal' domestic people, and to introduce the main characters' personality, we needed the surrounding environment to reflect and represent this.
We decided to simply shoot in a teenage bedroom, as we are teenagers ourselves and nothing can look more convincing than an actual/natural place which hasn't been falsely set up for filming purposes. Once we had in mind the room we needed for the opening, all that was left to ponder on was which teenage room, mine (Kellie's) or Cara, so we took some still shots of both.
Moreover, as the main plot of the film regards a virus deriving from water, we needed to in-cooperate a place which was water themed, as we have a low budget and cannot get too technical with locations, the best thing to do was film again in a place around the home such as the bathroom or kitchen, this also adds to the idea of domesticity and the fact that the virus is affecting regular people. We can't decide whether a bathroom or kitchen is best for this, but will see what looks better on camera on the day of filming.
Lastly, the thriller opening is a mystery thriller, also involving members of the governmental health departments, we therefore really needed a convincing setting otherwise it could look very budgeted, fake, and amateur. We visited science rooms around the college which were already equip with mise en scene items such as chemical bottles etc. We also visited small conference rooms which we could set up with our own props to create a sophisticated office and introduce the situation/characters, because they are not introduced through audio.
