Planning - Potential Locations

Overall, we plan to use 3 different locations for our film opening: Cara's bedroom, her kitchen and the college's science lab. In order to depict mise en scene, we thought it was necessary to portray real,  'human-like' personalities to each character. This is an attempt to make the audience as empathetic as possible. However, in regards to looking at Cara's room; it's too dark, despite drawing her curtains.  Though, we could just use a top light, I have many of concerns; for example: I wouldn't want the light glaring against walls and character's faces. Would the light be too bright for it's own good? And, would the light distracting those acting on camera? I research into this in another post.
